ZW-5 Five Years of the Zentralwäscherei
Five years of the Zentralwäscherei. Still going strong and far from finished!

What began as a temporary arrangement has, in five years, grown into an integral part of the cantonal and national cultural scene – without us ever having to compromise our core ethos. We continue to operate where things get interesting – and sometimes a little complicated: between institution and DIY, reputation and experimentation; between concert hall, club, restaurant, workshop, meeting place and a space for ideas that might not find a home elsewhere. From 17 to 22 November 2026, we’ll be celebrating the fifth edition of our annual anniversary festival. Over five days of the festival and one long night, the building will be brought to life across different art forms, transformed and shaken up to test just how much festival can fit into a former laundry building.

Tuesday w/ Holy Tongue and Angelfightrrr

Kulturraum Zentralwäscherei GROSSE HALLE

Live in Halle

LISTEN — Opening Night in Halle

We kick off five years of ZW with a night dedicated to sound in all its forms. The big Halle becomes the space of a collective experience, where brass meets electronics, rhythms turn into rituals, and familiar structures dissolve into something unexpected.

Zurich-based trumpeter and composer Angelfightrrr takes us on an echoing journey, feverishly exploring acoustic improvisation, feedback and drones. Holy Tongue deepen the trip into hypnotic territory as we finally get to welcome them to ZW, presenting their latest album, Basilikum. Weaving dub, ritual percussion, post-punk and psychedelic textures into an immersive, body-moving experience; with no fixed boundaries and no allegiance to genre, their work embraces movement, texture and collective energy. The result is immersive, transportive music that shifts between meditation and propulsion, intimacy and scale, always evolving in the moment.

An opening ceremony just like ZW: exploratory, open-ended and sometimes loud. Come listen closely, feel the pulse and let the festival begin.

Live in Halle

Holy Tongue

Holy Tongue are a trio composed of Valentina Magaletti (Moin), Susumu Mukai (Vanishing Twin) and Al Wootton. Accomplished musicians in their own right, they create expansive rhythmic music that moves freely through dub, trance, post-punk, free improvisation and cinematic psychedelia. Such a dynamic energy and force is mapped across a trilogy of critically acclaimed EPs, their debut album Deliverance and Spiritual Warfare and their collaborative album with dub-pioneer Shackleton.

They announce their sophomore album, Basilikum, on 29th of July, with the single Coca. The trio recorded a series of improvisations in the Swiss Alps and London. Built on the foundation of vintage drum machines and instinctive interplay they created compositions where no stylistic borders apply. The record melts and the musicians’ instruments synergise, with a rawness added with featured vocals from collaborator and experimental vocalist Dali de Saint Paul on two tracks. The record is out via AD 93 on September 25th. Dub techniques meet ritual percussion, hypnotic pulse and vast Popol Vuh-esque landscapes. Drawing equally from popular music, experimental traditions and spontaneous interaction, the trio treats playing, recording, editing and transformation as part of the same creative act. Sounds emerge, dissolve and reappear in new forms, creating a music that is both deeply physical and endlessly open. With no fixed boundaries and no allegiance to genre, their work embraces movement, texture and collective energy. The result is immersive, transportive music that shifts between meditation and propulsion, intimacy and scale, always evolving in the moment.

Angelfightrrr

Angelfightrrr is a trumpeter and composer based in Zurich. Their latest project leans on improvisational trumpet studies as well as the deconstruction and blend of brass and electronic textures: a performance that reaches from acoustic improvisation to intense clustering of feedbacks, drones and overlaying patterns. Angelfightrrr aims to create a feverish experience, whose pulse echoes both an alarm and a release.

WEDNESDAY - FOOD & BINGO

Kulturraum Zentralwäscherei GROSSE HALLE

THE GREAT ZW COOK OFF HOSTED BY MANIC PIXXIES

TASTE - Food is an integral part of ZW. We serve lunch, self-baked cakes and a diverse range of easy bites in the evening. For this year edition, we decided to turn our traditional food in Halle Wednesday into a cooking competition.

Two teams. Four courses. Eight dishes. One ultimate title.

On Wednesday the 18th of November Team Lilac and Team Artichoke, each consisting of 4 fearless units of cooks, will battle for the title across four courses - serving up eight dishes in total.

The team that receives the most votes will take home all the glory, but also a selection of goodies from KW’s special épicerie, like lime salts and special ferments. Anything to keep cooking!

And don’t worry, the voting doesn't stop there. The public will be able to select their all time favorite dish and our lovely hosts the Manic Pixxies will hand out some superlative awards.

The event is free to attend, but if you'd like to taste the dishes and join the tasting, can grab a ticket in advance to guarantee food and help us figure out how many serving we need to prepare.

Winebar by Paul Blume from Zürich
The Idendity of the cooks will be posted on our social media channels two weeks before the event!

Thursday w/ a Slapping workshop, a Talk, Movement Practice and a Performance

Kulturraum Zentralwäscherei BESCHALLUNGSRAUM

Thursday - FEEL

On Thursday we meet to finally find a place to put all the feelings: in our bodies, in conversation and most importantly in each other's company.

To kick the evening off, we start with a slap. In a hands-on workshop, we practise feminist self-empowerment and self-defence, learn to hold our ground under stress, and find out what a proper «Flättere gegen das Patriarchat» is all about. Open to all genders, bodies and levels of experience.

Then we turn to care: Who does it, where does it happen, and what would it take to organise it together instead of leaving it to overstretched institutions? With the Care Strike on the horizon, a panel of guests explore and show what different infrastructures of care can look like and how we can all organize ourselves together.

Later, we let the body lead. Movement Practice is a guided improvisation session with live music, spoken cues and plenty of space to follow sensation instead of intention. Expect a protected but unconventional setting where musicians and movers listen and respond to one another.

And as the night winds down, we’ll wake up one last time to end with a very special performance. We’re not saying more yet, but you’ll want to stay until the end.

Thursday - FEEL

Slapping Workshop with Luisa: A Slap into the face of Patriarchy

This workshop focuses on feminist self-empowerment and practical self-defence. We’ll practise how to land a proper slap, learn to function under pressure and assert ourselves physically against others. Whatever my identity, body or experience is. Open to all genders.
With and by the legendary Luisa Ricar.

Slapping Workshop with Luisa: A Slap into the face of Patriarchy

ZW-TalkIN*: Infrastructures of care

In this Panel we want to invite you to think, exchange and dream about different forms of care and the question of how we can think about and organise care beyond conventional & institutionalised structures. How can we consciously shape, organise and practise care collectively? With the big care strike coming up next year, this Panel is the perfect Warm-Up.

At the Panel we’ll have Ethel Baraona Pohl (they/them) representing «Care.». Lea Whitcher (she/her), the mother and inventor of «Care City», Anais Treadwell (she/her) from «Inaya» and lastly Shannon Hughes, who is part of «One Of A Million» festival. Bringing it all together we have Ra Fankhauser (they/them) who’s doing the moderation. What a great fucking round, if we may say so.

The Panel will be held in english.

Movement Practice

In “Movement-Practice” we explore together how we can shape space with our bodies. We create different landscapes with our movements and enter a state in which we give free rein to our impulses. It’s about letting go of our usual functional movements, shifting our limbs and perceiving gravity, tension, space, warmth, impulses, air and sounds and bringing them into an unexpected context.

Alexandra Bachzetsis

In her new solo performance Rush(es), Alexandra Bachzetsis situates the Self within autofiction, autoeroticism and autodocumentation. Envisioned as an introspective journey, the performance challenges taboos of behavior and explores the commodified nature of desire as it is both constructed and deconstructed by the dancing body.

Rush(es) is characterised by rapid transformations that push the body to its limits, reflecting pleasure, joy, solitude, anxiety through the intense physicality of the performer. In the process of corporeal metamorphosis, Bachzetsis navigates her body so that it ceases to be human and morphs into something else – an animal, an object, a tool.

In this solo performance, the audience is invited to perceive, examine and experience these physical transformations as a reflection of the collective consciousness. Rush(es) thus aims to evoke intuitive, immediate responses to music, space, text, and the actions of the body, taking both performer and audience into a heightened state of awareness and transformation.

Friday - Come as much as you are

Kulturraum Zentralwäscherei GROSSE HALLE

COME AS MUCH AS YOU ARE

WATCH - You have never seen a show like this!

Where is all your muchness? Have you also adapted to the game?

Do you know the feeling of slowly but surely being carved into a little capitalist minion, moving only in the controllable spectrum while being told you are free? - but only if you can adapt.

Come as much as you are is an evening where you take a seat, drink, look, dance, talk and walk in the mind of an individual that wonders…discover different aspects of the brain and humanity.

Where is our muchness? Shouldn’t we dare to be much muchier together?

There will be fiery burlesque, a rollerblading securita, a bendy situationship and many more performative layers.

Not a Show, but a Show. Come as much as you are and be a part of a brain.

The more the muchier.

M&M

M&M—Micaela Castrillo Vargas and Marius Cavin—are a contemporary circus duo who met while studying at the Academy for Circus and Performance Art (Fontys) in the Netherlands. Drawing on their diverse artistic backgrounds and disciplines, they developed a shared movement language that combines acrobatics, aerial art, diabolo, partnering, dance, and performance. Micaela, born in Bolivia and raised in Chile, works as an aerial artist and movement artist. Her work moves between physicality, poetry, and political expression, exploring themes such as identity, belonging, and transformation. Marius, born and raised in Basel, combines diabolo and acrobatics with a clown-like stage presence. Humor is a central tool in his artistic work.

As M&M, these different worlds come together. Together, they develop humorous, poetic, and physical works in which the circus is understood not only as a spectacular discipline but also as a language for interpersonal relationships, emotions, and social issues. Their pieces seek a balance between lightness and depth and aim above all to do one thing: touch people, make them laugh, and inspire them to reflect.

Vogel im Wein by Andreea Gwerder

Inspired by myths, stories, and imagery we weave around birds and the rituals of the table, the fountain "Vogel im Wein" came into being. It draws the guest toward itself, inviting them to dip its beak into their glass until it is filled slowly once more. The sweet drink circulates, seeking to refiesh all of us who are so heavily burdened. As if in a trance, spirits are lifted, and for a brief moment the guests are made to feel as though they can fly.

Using cardboard, wood, and other materials, participants create sculptures, games, small spaces, or things that don’t yet have a name. A tour of the ZWZ with the Raumbörse

What is ZW ? What is ZWZ ? What is the Josef-Areal ?
A tour of the Zwischennutzung with the Raumbörse

The temporary use of the former Zentralwäscherei facility is to be extended until 2035. If the final funds of use of the areal will be submitted to voters later this year, the temporary use of the space was reconducted last month by the City Council.

ZW is part of ZWZ, and we know that this is confusing sometimes. Our Verein, Zentralwäschrei, is an alternative cultural center at the Ground Floor of the ZWZ. It has a restaurant/bar, and two other rooms that offer a diverse program, but the ZWZ building does not stop at ZW, and many other associations and creatives are also in the building.

So, what does this Zwischennutzung actually entail? Raumbörse, which is the organ of the city that oversees the areal, will give a tour through the building through exciting studios such as the Bitwäscherei, Recreazz, and many more.

Meeting at 16:00 next to the bar in the Kleinwäscherei (restaurant)

Congo, 1960: The South Kasaï region declares secession. Its constitution consists of only 14 articles. The state is overwhelmed, and thousands of civilians are massacred. From this disaster emerges an expression that becomes common parlance: "Article 15 ».
In other words : Make do
Paris, 2024: Performer Wilfried Luzele (Lova Lova) teams up with electronic producer GRIGRI (Gargäntua). Two sorcerers, one spell: The raw energy of Kinshasa’s streets delivered with unrelenting ferocity, mirroring the political violence that inspired the name of this new duo, weaving Lingala and French together in a voice both powerful and roughened by the harsh truths it conveys. Could they have really wished for better allies than the grimacing synthesizers of Gargäntua's dark mage to set the dancefloor ablaze ?

Some will see a new face of rap, bruised by the harsh reality of the streets of Kinshasa, like a dark opera tinged with witchcraft. Others will think of a turning point in electronic music, embodied like never before: sweaty and gritty, radical and defiant.
In the end, no one will be entirely right, and no one will be entirely wrong. But everyone will dance.

Nidor ft. Néové (live)

Behind “Nidor feat Néové” lies a single artist with two complementary identities. This dual project embodies the meeting of two musical worlds: on one side, Néové, his hip-hop and rap project, where it all began; on the other, Nidor, his electronic project, primarily influenced by soundsystem culture and encompassing both music production and DJing.

Néové was born out of an early passion for hip-hop and rap, which he discovered at the age of 14. Inspired by these rhythmic and lyrical influences, the artist began producing music, writing his first lyrics, and developing his own distinctive voice. Today, this project allows him to explore critical perspectives on global politics through deep, atmospheric productions, where lyrics and sound come together as one.

A few years later, his older sister introduced him to the club scene, opening the door to a whole new world. This encounter with electronic music, heavy bass, soundsystems, and the energy of the dancefloor gave birth to Nidor. While Néové explores introspection and messages, Nidor draws his strength from the raw power of soundsystems and the physicality of music.

Today, these two worlds no longer stand apart — they merge. “Nidor feat Néové” becomes a meeting point between rap and electronic music, lyrics and production, introspection and club energy.

The live set that emerges from this fusion is an invitation to close your eyes and let yourself be carried away.

Projet Wipeout (live)

Wipeout, definition: the art of falling well… In surfing, a wipeout happens when you lose control of your board on a wave, fall, and let yourself be swept away by the force of the current.

This idea lies at the heart of the project’s philosophy, where taking risks and embracing the unexpected become the very driving forces of musical creation. Born in Geneva, Projet Wipeout is a collective of around 80 musicians from different backgrounds and musical worlds, brought together to celebrate music in its most vibrant form: improvisation and live performance. Every concert brings a completely new line-up of musicians, creating a unique and spontaneous musical experience. Blending genres, sounds and individual influences, each formation explores uncharted sonic territory. On stage, the musicians listen, respond and feed off each other’s energy, letting themselves be carried by the crowd. The result is an organic, one-of-a-kind moment of creation that exists only in the here and now.
