The QUEERMESS project is an alternative Christmas celebration, developed through a collaboration between Zentralwäscherei and Klamydia von Karma. Taking place on December 25th, the event combines a curated communal dinner, night of drag performance art as well as a dancefloor, transforming a traditionally family-centered holiday into a space of collective gathering, peace, and inclusion.
By merging drag, performance, visual art, dance, music, and a communal dinner, QUEERMESS blurs the boundaries between artistic disciplines and social practices, creating a space for all where queer, trans, and non-binary voices are not only visible but celebrated.
The nightclub has historically been more than a site of entertainment: it has been a political engine where stories converge and hierarchies dissolve. The Stonewall Inn uprising in New York in 1969, led largely by trans women of colour and working-class queer people, transformed a space of leisure into the birthplace of a global movement for LGBTQ rights. Across Europe, venues such as Club SO36, Königshof, Eldorado Club, Kakadu bar in Berlin or The Warehouse Project in Manchester have similarly blurred class and cultural boundaries, producing spaces of resistance where art, pleasure, and politics collide.
QUEERMESS draws on this legacy, positioning the dancefloor as the place where equality and convergence of stories truly begin, where differences become strengths and where collective joy emerges as a form of resistance.
By taking place on December 25th, QUEERMESS reclaims the symbolic weight of Christmas. In biblical tradition, Christmas marks the birth of hope in a time of oppression: the arrival of renewal, togetherness, and care for the most vulnerable. Without parodying religion, QUEERMESS reinterprets this universal narrative to propose a radical and inclusive Christmas: not an exclusive family ritual, but a collective act of solidarity, unity, and freedom. Gathering around food, performance, and mutual support becomes a contemporary incarnation of the biblical call to welcome the stranger, protect the marginalised, and resist injustice through love and community. In this way, QUEERMESS embodies a necessary cultural intervention in times of discrimination and precarity, transforming a holiday of exclusion into a movement of belonging, resistance, and collective joy.
